Improving Daily Functioning and Mobility

Assistive Technology aims to improve daily functioning and mobility for individuals with disabilities. This can include a wide range of devices and technologies.  The CIDE Assistive Technology Clinic helps individuals find appropriate mobility devices (wheelchairs, scooters, etc.), communication aids, nighttime positioning equipment, and/or computer access devices and software.  Our clinicians also help determine the client’s best access for the recommended technology (such as eye gaze, switch control, joystick, etc.). These tools are designed to compensate for specific physical impairments and enable individuals to perform activities they might otherwise find challenging or impossible.

Customized Solutions for Individual Needs

Assistive Technology specialists work closely with patients, their families, and a team of healthcare professionals to assess individual needs and develop customized solutions. Each person's condition is unique, and Assistive Technology professionals take into account factors such as the type and severity of the disability, personal goals, and environmental considerations when recommending and fitting assistive devices.

Maximizing Independence and Quality of Life

The primary goal of Assistive Technology in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation is to maximize independence and enhance the overall quality of life for individuals with disabilities. By providing access to assistive devices, these specialists empower patients to participate in daily activities, engage in social interactions, pursue education and employment opportunities, and lead fulfilling lives.

Evaluation, Training, and Support

Assistive Technology specialists not only assist with the selection and fitting of appropriate devices but also provide comprehensive evaluation, training, and ongoing support. They assess the effectiveness of the chosen technology, ensure proper usage, and make any necessary adjustments to optimize its benefits. Moreover, they educate patients and their families on device maintenance, troubleshooting, and connecting with community resources for additional support.

Staying at the Forefront of Technological Advances

Assistive Technology professionals in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation stay abreast of the latest technological advancements in their field. They collaborate with researchers, engineers, and manufacturers to incorporate cutting-edge innovations into their practice. This continuous engagement with emerging technologies ensures that patients have access to the most advanced and effective assistive devices available.
