What is Gastroenterology? 

Gastroenterology, pronounced gas-troh-en-TER-all-oh-jee, is the branch of medicine focused on treating conditions affecting your digestive system. A provider who practices gastroenterology is known as a gastroenterologist. A gastroenterologist, often referred to interchangeably as a “GI doctor” or “GI provider”, diagnoses, treats and manages conditions involving the following organs: 

  • Esophagus and stomach 
  • Small and large intestines 
  • Liver (in partnership with a hepatologist)
  • Gallbladder and bile ducts 
  • Pancreas 

What Does a Gastroenterologist Do? 

GI doctors and providers diagnose and treat diseases of the digestive tract, pancreas and liver. You may see a gastroenterologist for symptoms such as: 

  • Abdominal pain 
  • Acid reflux 
  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • Heartburn

What is Hepatology?

Hepatology is a subspecialty within gastroenterology focused on diseases of the liver. Our hepatology providers treat the full spectrum of liver diseases including viral hepatitis, liver tumors, autoimmune and cholestatic diseases, fibrocystic diseases, vascular diseases and all aspects of liver transplantation. 

What Do I Need to Do to Prepare for my GI Appointment? 

Before making an appointment Please note that most insurance companies require a referral from your primary care physician prior to visiting a gastroenterologist.

The day of the appointment Please bring the following information with you to your appointment:

  1. Past medical records related to your diagnosis
  2. Radiology films such as X rays, CT scans, PET scans and bone scans with reports
  3. Pathology slides with reports
  4. Questions for your physician
  5. Your insurance card and copay

Plan to arrive 15- 20 minutes before your scheduled appointment time to complete the necessary forms.

Prior to scheduling an appointment we must have the following:

  1. Past medical records related to your diagnosis
  2. Radiology films such as X rays, CT scans, PET scans and bone scans with reports
  3. Pathology slides with reports
  4. Questions for your physician
  5. Your insurance card and copay

In addition, we will send a packet which includes a health survey and health history form. You will need to bring these completed forms to your scheduled appointment.
