Mommy Makeover Guide: Restoring Your Body with Dr. Winocour

What is a mommy makeover and is it just for moms? We spoke with CU Medicine plastic surgeon Dr. Julian Winocour to learn more about this combined procedure that is helping women reach their functional and aesthetic goals.

A mommy makeover is a combination of cosmetic procedures designed to help women restore their pre-pregnancy bodies after childbearing. This popular surgical approach addresses the physical changes that often occur during pregnancy and breastfeeding, such as changes in breast shape and size, loose abdominal skin and stubborn fat.

Common procedures included in a mommy makeover are breast augmentation, breast lift, tummy tuck and liposuction. Breast augmentation involves the use of implants or fat transfers to increase breast size and improve shape. A breast lift, or mastopexy, raises and reshapes sagging breasts. A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, removes excess skin and fat from the abdominal area while tightening the underlying muscles. Liposuction targets and removes pockets of diet- and exercise-resistant fat.

The key benefit of combining these procedures into a single mommy makeover is that it allows for a more comprehensive transformation with just one recovery period. Patients can address multiple concerns at once, rather than undergoing several separate surgeries over time. This approach is both more efficient and more cost-effective for qualifying candidates.

We spoke with CU Medicine plastic surgeon Dr. Julian Winocour to learn about this popular procedure that’s not just for postpartum women.

Dr. Winocour practices at CU Medicine Cosmetic Surgery – CU Anschutz Health and Wellness Center and has done numerous mommy makeovers.

“A mommy makeover is a term people use to describe a procedure that combines restoration of the breasts and body contouring procedures like liposuction and tummy tuck,” shares Dr. Winocour.

Ideal candidates for a mommy makeover are women who have gone through pregnancy, childbirth and breastfeeding, and want to regain their pre-baby figures. The best candidates are done having children and are at a stable, healthy weight.

“It’s important to note that this procedure is not just for postpartum women. Many of the changes to the body we see like sagging of breasts and stubborn fat can happen to women due to normal aging or weight loss,” says Dr. Winocour.

Preparing for a mommy makeover requires both physical and mental preparation. Patients should be cleared for surgery by their primary care physician and be committed to maintaining a healthy lifestyle after recovery.

Dr. Winocour advises patients to have a support system set up at home and socially in addition to pre-operative discussions with their providers to ensure the best outcome possible. “It’s important to set up a plan of care before your mommy makeover so people can be around to help while you recover,” he shares.

Breast Procedures for Mommy Makeover

Breast augmentation is one of the most common procedures included in a mommy makeover. It involves surgically placing breast implants or using fat transfer to increase breast size and improve shape and projection. There are several types of implants available, including saline and silicone gel options in varying sizes and projections.

A breast lift, or mastopexy, is another frequent component. It raises and reshapes the breasts by removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissue to restore perkiness and a more youthful contour.

Tummy Tuck and Liposuction for Mommy Makeover

A tummy tuck, known medically as abdominoplasty, is a key part of restoring a pre-baby body. It removes loose, stretched abdominal skin and fat, while also repairing and tightening the underlying abdominal muscles that can become separated during pregnancy.

Liposuction is often combined to address stubborn pockets of fat that don't respond to diet and exercise, such as on the hips, thighs or flanks.

Recovery and Results

The recovery process after a mommy makeover can take several weeks. Most patients can return to light activities in 1-2 weeks, while it takes 4-6 weeks to resume exercise and normal routines.

"Post any surgical procedure, there can be a complication. Related to mommy makeovers, complications are usually classified as minor. It’s important to know when to seek medical help either at urgent care or the emergency in the unlikely event of a major complication,” shares Dr. Winocour.

Managing discomfort is an important part of the recovery process. Dr. Winocour and his team provide guidance on pain medication, wound care, surgical garments and other strategies to minimize discomfort.

While initial results are visible almost immediately, it can take 6 months to a year for residual swelling to fully subside and to see the final mommy makeover outcome.

To maintain mommy makeover results long-term, patients should commit to a stable, healthy lifestyle with regular exercise and a balanced diet.

Common complications for mommy makeovers:

  • Pain
  • Scarring
  • Small wound problems that require wound care

Major complications from a mommy makeover are rare, but it’s important to know the signs of a complication of any size.

Choosing the Right Plastic Surgeon

When considering a mommy makeover or any cosmetic procedure, selecting a highly qualified, experienced plastic surgeon is crucial for safe and satisfactory results. Board certification by the American Board of Plastic Surgery ensures a surgeon has comprehensive training and meets rigorous standards.

"When seeking out a surgeon for a mommy makeover, it’s important to make sure the surgeon is board-certified and that the clinic meets all compliance standards,” Dr. Winocour said.

Dr. Winocour advises patients to have an in-person consultation, review before and after photos and ask about the surgeon's specialties and safety protocols.
